Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. It uses light energy that changes to heat and produces damage to the follicles that produce hair which reduces future hair growth. It does not result in permanent hair removal and is more effective on darker hair. 

You may be an ideal candidate for laser hair removal if you:

• Have unwanted hair.
• Have not recently tanned (using a tanning bed).
• Are not sunburned.
• Are not pregnant.

In order to experience the best results from laser hair removal, you should:

• Clean your skin prior to treatment.
• Stop waxing or plucking for six weeks prior.
• Shave the treatment are within one or two days of treatment.
• Avoid sun exposure.
• Avoid medications that can increase sensitivity of skin or cause unwanted side effects (blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, hormone treatments)
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment.
• Stop drinking coffee a few hours prior to your appointment.

These are just a handful of recommendations to allow your treatment to go smoothly. For the best results, listen to all of the recommendations and suggestions provided by your esthetician.

During the appointment, your expectations will depend on the area of skin being treated. For any specific questions about what to expect during your appointment, ask Dr. McKenzie during your consultation.

After the appointment, patients can expect some redness and swelling in the treatment area. Results should be immediately noticeable. However, most patients require two to six treatments to completely remove the hair from the area. After the hair is completely removed, most patients don’t see hair regrowth for months, sometimes even years.
