JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, Radiesse® & Sculptra® are each a form of dermal filler approved by the FDA. They each have their own pros and cons and should be discussed with your doctor to determine which is the best fit for your lifestyle and desired outcome.

Dermal fillers have wide variations in texture, longevity and firmness. They can be used to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump the lips, fill the cheeks, facial folds and lines. It is an excellent way to help restore the youthful appearance, smoothness, and volume of the skin.

JUVÉDERM® can be used for moderate wrinkles and creases in the face, often used to smooth complexion over time (up to one year depending on formulation used). It is hyaluronic acid based and restores volume either by filling out lips or smoothing out lines.

Restylane® is composed of hyaluronic acid, and typically only lasts 6-9 months. There are many options available in the Restylane® family depending on your specific needs. It is often used on the face and can promote volume and skin hydration.

Radiesse® is also composed of hyaluronic acid, but additionally contains hydroxyl apatite which adds more volume than hyaluronic acid alone. It lasts longer than some other dermal fillers (up to 18 months), but it should not be used near the eyes or lips and instead more suited for cheek lifts or to reduce the visibility of veins in hands.

Sculptra® varies the most in composition and use. It is an injection designed to help your face begin to produce its own collagen again over time. It works over a period of time and typically takes 3 treatments and a few months to see the results. However, this filler helps to recover lost volume over time using the skin’s natural regenerative process rather than providing an immediate result.

If you have lost volume in your lips or cheeks, have lines formed due to decreased volume in your face, or are unhappy with the visibility of veins in your hands – dermal fillers may be right for you! However, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the injections, have a history of severe allergies, scar easily, are taking blood thinners or have a history of bleeding disorders – you may not be an ideal candidate. Your doctor will discuss specific side effects to each type of dermal filler, but patients may experience temporary redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site.

Once the swelling goes down or the bruising and redness clears, what you will see depends on the specific dermal filler chosen. For JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® you can expect to see results right away, however results may take time to settle and for the swelling and bruising to fade. For Radiesse® you will notice a change right after treatment, but the full benefit will take a few weeks to become apparent. However, as mentioned above, results for Sculptra® will take longer to notice as it stimulates your skin’s natural regeneration process.
