What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is an FDA-approved prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective for the treatment of fat outside of the submental area or in children under 18 years of age.

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring chemical that helps to dissolve dietary fat in the body. When injected, KYBELLA® works to break down fat cells that it encounters, removing them from the body permanently.

What to Expect from KYBELLA® Treatments

KYBELLA® treatments take on average 15-20 minutes and are performed in the MedSpa with local anesthesia for your comfort. One KYBELLA® treatment session consists of anywhere from 25 to 50 injections in the area below the chin. After the treatment session, patients may experience some bruising and swelling. Some patients may also experience discomfort or numbness at the injection site. Before your appointment, Dr. McKenzie will discuss specific details on what to expect and how to care for the injection site for the next few days. The results from KYBELLA® are expected to be permanent, unless there is significant weight gain that affects the treatment area. Many patients often require two or more treatment sessions to achieve the final desired results.
